Tambour Door for LCD - in progress

2006/05/01

Nice idea, but decided against it. Going for doors instead.

Decided to try and make a quick rolling tambour door to see how it would look as I decide how to refactor the LCD housing.

I took a scrap piece of ABS. I wasn't sure how I was going to cut it, so I just used some one inch tape to mark the sections and the horizontal stripe is to even out the other edge.

Pre cut

I couldn't find my hot knife, so I just kept scoring it with a box cutter. The edges suffered. If you did this right, the whole process to would only be probably 20 minutes until it was ready to paint. So for now, I just tried to level it with some sand paper.

I figured bunching them together would give me a better shot of staying even.

flattening edges

Mostly straight. I hit it again later. Over shot

I carefully hacksawed out the notches as best I could.

Notching

Another shot of the notches. Later I filed this down to be more even.

Notches

The edges cleand up and ready to prep. Need to remove the label goop residue.

Cleaned up edges

Sanded and prepped. After I used a scuff pad.

Prepped

Then just used plastic primer and some hastily sprayed paint.

Here's where it's at now. Paint drying.

Paint drying

I used the only canvas cloth I had lying around. I'd probably use a black backing if I had any handy or if I do it again.

door in place

Seems pretty flexible.

Door bending

Hopefully I'll get the runners done in the next few days.

If I decide this is the way to go, I'll do it again and take me time to get it right. Probably also use 1/8 instead of 3/32" abs.
